What we do

The Institute of Banking is the largest professional institute in Ireland. We are a community of 32,500 members who work in banking and financial services.

Professional development of our members through education is at the heart of what we do.  We are a not-for-profit organisation.

The Institute provides university-level banking education programmes and related services. These enable our members to achieve and sustain their professional qualifications and continuing professional development – essential to meet customer and regulatory expectations.

More than 9,500 of our members are currently studying with us.

We get you qualified to work in banking and financial services. Our qualifications, where appropriate, meet the Central Bank of Ireland’s regulatory requirements, including the Minimum Competency Code.

Professional standards

The Institute’s mission is to make a defining contribution to the renewal of professional standards and standing of Irish banking and financial services to the ultimate benefit of customers and society. Professional members of the Institute are committed to upholding the best standards of integrity, professionalism, propriety, objectivity and fairness.

We believe that education is the bedrock of any profession and the basis of professional standards.

Excellence in education

As a recognised college of University College Dublin (UCD) and the standout industry educator, we offer qualifications of the highest standard.

We currently have more than 40 programmes ranging from Professional Certificates (level 7 on the NFQ) to Masters Degree (level 9).

We design our programmes to be practical and relevant, but grounded in academic rigour. We focus on providing innovative and flexible education options to ensure that we meet your changing needs. All our programmes are part-time.

An education framework for the banking profession

Through our Professional Education Framework, the Institute provides a core set of qualifications and a professional pathway for everyone in banking – from customer advisor to board director.

Developed in conjunction with the banks and UCD, the Framework supports banking professionals in developing their knowledge and their transferable skills. It enhances their capability and confidence in developing their careers and in availing of new opportunities.

It also sustains employability of banking professionals in the context of changing industry and organisational needs. The Framework is open to everyone, whatever their age, career stage, qualifications, experience, specialism and ambition.

The Institute is one of Ireland’s biggest providers of elearning. You can study with us using your PC, tablet or smart phone. Our elearning supports include:

Lifelong learning is crucial for you to succeed and thrive in your career. We have the largest continuing professional development (CPD) community in Ireland, with more than 23,500 registered members.

A unique alliance with a global brand in risk management education

In 2015 we formed an alliance with PRMIA which is unique in Europe. PRMIA is a leading global educator of risk management professionals and is active in major financial centres around the world. It has over 50,000 members in 65 countries worldwide, with more than 2,400 companies employing PRMIA designates. It is a not-for-profit organisation.

Through the alliance our members can learn about global best practice in operational risk management. They have the opportunity to study on three different risk management programmes and achieve dual awards – an academic qualification (at degree level 8) from UCD and an internationally recognised Operational Risk Manager Certificate from PRMIA.

Executive education

Our executive and specialist programmes are designed for directors, senior executives and high-potential managers within the financial services sector.

Our valued partners

We offer some programmes in partnership with other professional bodies, including:

  • Association of Compliance Officers in Ireland (ACOI)
  • The Insurance Institute of Ireland (III)
  • Irish Funds Industry Association (IFIA)
  • Irish Tax Institute (ITI)
  • Life Insurance Association (LIA).

Innovating to help you

Innovation is one of our core values. We constantly strive to introduce new ideas, new education programmes and services, and to make things better for our members.

The Institute has developed new programmes to achieve the highest levels of quality, relevance and recognition – both nationally and internationally. A recent example is the Certified Investment Fund Director programme (offered with the IFIA), which is unique in Europe. Another example is our Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning,  which is the only qualification in Ireland recognised by the worldwide Financial Planning Standards Board for its Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. There are 147,000 CFP professionals in 24 countries, including Ireland.

Active in Europe

We are an active member of the European Bank Training Network (EBTN), which brings together the national banking institutes in Europe. It has 27 European country members and 11 associate members, and promotes joint education, training and research initiatives.

Its vision is to become the standard-setting body for the accreditation, certification and qualification of knowledge, skills and competencies in the European financial services sector.
